At Greenvolt Next Ireland, we believe that the future of energy lies in the power of commercial renewable solutions and we’re proud to be helping some of Ireland’s most recognisable businesses lead the charge. Our latest collaboration with Tesco Ireland marks a major step forward in the transition to clean energy.

Tesco Implementing Commercial Renewable Energy

Through our growing partnership, 12 Tesco sites across Ireland, combining in total 5MW of commercial renewable energy. These installations are helping power stores with solar energy that can meet up to 20% of their total electricity needs, a substantial impact on both operating costs and carbon emissions.

Each solar installation contributes to Tesco’s ambitious 2035 carbon neutrality goal, supporting the retailer’s sustainability strategy while relieving pressure on Ireland’s national grid.

Turning Rooftops into Commercial Renewable Sources

Tesco’s large-format stores are ideal candidates for solar PV. Greenvolt Next Ireland and Tesco Ireland began their partnership back in 2016 with the first commercial renewable installation of more than 2,000 panels at Tesco Extra stores in Liffey Valley and Naas. Our latest projects have just gone live at:

Tesco Extra stores in Dundalk, Clearwater, and Arklow

Tesco Superstores in Carrick-on-Shannon and Ballybeg

These installations are backed by a 26-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), a long-term commitment that brings both stability and sustainability to Tesco’s energy future.

As Owen Power, CEO of Greenvolt Next Ireland, explains:

“The large flat roof spaces of big retail units provide an excellent opportunity to seamlessly integrate solar panels, reducing both energy costs and emissions. Tesco has been a front-runner in adopting renewable energy, and we are delighted to enhance its solar energy capacity further, helping Tesco meet its ambitious decarbonisation goals.”

Supporting National and EU Climate Goals

With each installation, Tesco is not only progressing toward its internal sustainability targets but also contributing to Ireland’s broader efforts to meet EU carbon reduction commitments. The solar panels we’ve installed will collectively generate enough clean energy annually to power around 900 Irish homes and this is just the beginning.

At a recent launch event in Tesco Extra Dundalk, Minister for Climate, Environment and Energy, Darragh O’Brien TD, applauded the project, stating:

It’s a very positive step forward to see Tesco harnessing the massive potential of solar energy to provide cheaper, green energy for their larger stores. This will help to significantly reduce the stores’ carbon footprint and contribute positively to Ireland’s sustainability agenda

What’s Next?

The journey doesn’t stop here. Plans are already underway to bring solar power to 26 additional Tesco locations in the coming years, including installations scheduled for:

Tesco’s distribution centre in Ballymun

Stores in Mitchelstown, Nenagh, New Ross, and Tullow

In addition, nine more stores will be equipped with solar panels this year, adding another 1MW of on-site renewable generation capacity.

A Shared Vision for a Sustainable Ireland

At Greenvolt Next, we’re proud to be working with forward-thinking partners like Tesco Ireland who recognise the value  and necessity of investing in renewable energy. Together, we’re proving that sustainability and smart business go hand in hand.

If your organisation is ready to explore the benefits of clean, cost-effective solar energy, we’d love to help you take the next step.
