At Greenvolt Next Ireland, our mission is to support organisations in their transition towards clean, renewable energy. Seeing Dublin Airport officially switch on Phase 1 of its new solar farm through our partnership is a significant milestone

Dublin Airport’s 9MW solar farm was officially inaugurated yesterday, 7th April 2025, by the Minister of Transport in Ireland, Darragh O’Brien. More than 15,000 solar panels, installed across 28 acres near the south runway, are now generating clean electricity right where it’s needed. That means fewer emissions, lower energy costs, and a big step forward in making one of Ireland’s busiest hubs more sustainable.

Powering One of Ireland’s Biggest Gateways: Dublin Airport Solar Project

This first phase of the solar farm is already producing enough energy to cover 10–13% of Dublin Airport’s annual electricity needs, including everything out on the airfield. And when there is extra power? The energy surplus will go towards ensuring that the terminals and wider campus run smoothly.

This is a real example of what local, onsite renewable energy can do, especially in places that can’t afford to lose power.

Andrea Carroll, daa Group Director of Sustainability, said: “daa has a very ambitious programme of decarbonisation. Phase 1 of our solar farm is now operational and Phase 2 will expand the renewable electricity output. Generating and using renewable energy is a key part of the programme to reduce emissions in line with commitments under the National Climate Action Plan

And We’re Just Getting Started

DAA is not stopping here as it is now processing the next stage of the project—Phase 2—which will see another 6,000 panels installed by late 2027 (pending planning permission). The feasibility study is currently underway to find the best spot on campus for it.

Once that’s up and running, it means another 4-6% of Dublin Airport’s energy will come from renewable energy—enough to power critical systems like baggage handling in both terminals.

daa is also developing a longer-term solar roadmap to include further phases of the solar farm and allow Dublin Airport to meet its 2030 target of 20% of electricity coming from renewable sources.

Looking to the Future

More than ever, it’s key that sectors considered more challenging to achieve carbon neutrality lead the way in producing and consuming clean energy, in which solar contributes to a wider sustainable strategy. The momentum is now, and we’re proud to continue partnering with Dublin Airport and help them achieve 20% of the airport’s annual electricity needs coming from renewable solar energy by 2030 with our tailored energy solutions.

At Greenvolt Next, we’re passionate about helping forward-thinking organisations like daa take bold steps toward a cleaner future. Whether it’s a solar farm on an airport, a rooftop system on a warehouse, or helping whole campuses decarbonise—we are here to bring Energy Next To You.
