Dublin Airport’s 9MW solar farm was officially inaugurated yesterday, 7th April 2025, by the Minister of Transport in Ireland, Darragh O\u2019Brien. More than 15,000 solar panels<\/b>, installed across 28 acres near the south runway, are now generating clean electricity right where it\u2019s needed. Powering One of Ireland\u2019s Biggest Gateways: Dublin Airport Solar Project<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n[\/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”No Line”][vc_column_text]This first phase of the solar farm is already producing enough energy to cover 10\u201313% of Dublin Airport\u2019s annual electricity needs<\/b>, including everything out on the airfield. And when there is extra power? The energy surplus will go towards ensuring that the terminals and wider campus run smoothly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This is a real example of what local, onsite renewable energy can do, especially in places that can\u2019t afford to lose power.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Andrea Carroll<\/b>, daa Group Director of Sustainability, said: \u201cdaa has a very ambitious programme of decarbonisation. Phase 1 of our solar farm is now operational and Phase 2 will expand the renewable electricity output. And We\u2019re Just Getting Started <\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n[\/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”No Line”][vc_column_text]DAA is not stopping here as it is now processing the next stage of the project\u2014Phase 2<\/b>\u2014which will see another 6,000 panels<\/b> installed by late 2027 (pending planning permission). The feasibility study is currently underway to find the best spot on campus for it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Once that\u2019s up and running, it means another 4-6% of Dublin Airport\u2019s energy will come from renewable energy<\/b>\u2014enough to power critical systems like baggage handling in both terminals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
